Travel Consent Letter
A Travel Consent Letter is a document that permits a child to travel alone without their parents or legal guardians or travel with an adult who is neither their parent nor legal guardian. It can also be used by separated couples where their children will be travelling with only one parent.
This document can be used for both domestic and international trips. However, for international trips, the passport number of the minor must be included.
This document should include the following:
- Information about the minor. This includes the name, gender, place of birth, the type of trip (whether it is local or international trip) and the passport number of the child.
- Travel information of the minor. This includes the destination, the travel date and arrival date.
- Information about the parent/legal guardian who is granting the consent.
- Information about the non-travelling parent/legal guardian is needed if the child is travelling with only one parent/legal guardian where the parents are separated or divorced.
- Information about an adult person who will accompany the child. if the child will be travelling with an adult who is neither their parent/legal guardian, the name, address, phone number and email addresses of an adult who will accompany the child will be required.
- Information about the organization arranging the trip. Sometimes, the child's school or any other organization may organize excursion programmes or outings for their young students. If this is the case, the name and address of the organization will be required. Also, the particulars of an adult supervisor will also be required.
- Allergy and special medical needs of the minor. If the minor has any allergies or other special needs, for example, suffers from asthma, very prone to cold, etc, this should be stated in this document.
How to use this document
This document can be used by a parent/legal guardian whose minor/child is about to travel without their parents/legal guardian or with only one parent.
After filling this form, the parent(s)/legal guardian(s) giving their consent must sign the document and the child should have a copy of this document to show the authorities at the airport.
Applicable law
This document is not required by any law in Nigeria. However, it is often requested by immigration officers and airlines to contact parent(s)/legal guardian(s) in emergency situations.
